Local designer unveils renovated ao dai collection
Local designer Kevin Nguyen has launched a renovated ao dai (Vietnamese dress) collection called ASEAN Beauty – Flowers of ASEAN, which features innovative designs made from local silk, satin and tussore material at Peony Vietnam in HCMC’s District 7.
Inspired by the friendship of the 10 ASEAN countries with unique cultural values, each design has hand-made patterns of each country’s national flower.
The designs help glorify women’s body and thus make them look more elegant and charming.
Target customers of the fashion brand are middle aged women who are entrepreneurs and white collars. They can wear these modern and fashionable ao dai to attend meetings and events.
The fashion brand expects to offer more ready-to-wear designs of dresses and skirts and hand-made accessories to its customers.
Peony Vietnam is located at Unit 15A1, Dragon Hill Building, Nguyen Huu Tho Street, District 7, HCMC.
Hoi An holds int’l archaeology training course
Hoi An City has opened an international archaeology course in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
Lasting until July 12, the course is attended by 36 people from 13 countries including the U.S., the Netherlands, Ireland, Hungary, Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Apart from theory, participants will make a field trip to Cham Islet.
International and Vietnamese experts are learning about shipwreck ceramics, maritime archeology, coastal and oceanography geophysical survey, diving and diving equipment, and relics.
Colourful running event to be held in Da Nang
Over 5,000 people will be splashed with coloured powder during the ‘Colour Me Run’, the most colourful running event in Vietnam, set to be held in the central coastal city of Da Nang on June 27.
Groups of participants will jog or run a five-kilometre race, starting from Phan Dang Luu Street, and will be doused head to toe in a different colour at each kilometre marker.
Themed ‘We will be united’, the event aims to create a new fun fitness trend, serving as a place to share fun moments with families and friends.
The ‘Colour Me Run’ was inspired by the Holi Festival from India and has become an annual event in numerous countries worldwide.
The event was held in Ho Chi Minh City on April 11 with the participation of over 2,000 people. The same event is scheduled to take place in Hanoi in September.
The organising board expects the ‘Colour Me Run’ will be held in Vietnam every year.
Rare antiques discovered in Thanh Hoa
A series of rare antiques from thousands of years ago has been uncovered at Vinh Long commune, Thanh Hoa province, about 1km to the southeast of the Ho Dynasty Citadel.
The antiques include bowls, plates and work instruments made with materials such as porcelain iron, and precious stone. Almost all of the antique bowls and plates are enameled, the mouth of the antique bowls are 20 centimeters wide.
Most notably, a number of glazed terracotta jars and pottery pieces have been discovered. The pottery pieces are believed to date from the 10th century, according to Doctor Tran Anh Dung from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology.
The antiques will most likely be preserved at Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Centre for further research and display.
The discovery is important to the conservation, management and promotion of Vietnamese heritage.
The Ho Dynasty Citadel, located in the two communes of Vinh Tien and Vinh Long, is a unique stone-made architectural work in Vietnam.
Built by Ho Quy Ly in 1397, the citadel eventually became the home of the capital.
For more than 600 years of its existence, most of the buildings inside the Citadel were destroyed. Traces of the foundations of the old palaces still lie hidden under the rice fields.
The citadel was recognised as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO in June 2011.
Book of cartoons lampoon corruption
A book of about 200 cartoons mocking corrupt officials was released last Saturday in the capital city.
The cartoons, done by 26 amateur and professional painters from different parts of the country, are presented in a book called Tuyen Tap Tranh Biem Hoa Quan Tham (Caricature Collection Mocking Greedy Officials).
It uses irony and humour to lampoon State officials engaging in corruption and wastage.
“The 200 cartoons chosen for the book reflect as many views of artists on various issues in 12 sectors like education, healthcare, construction, traffic and power,” said Mai Phan Loi, head of Ha Noi bureau of HCM City Law newspaper, which has supported the book’s publication along with the Centre for Community Education via Media.
“The artists have exaggerated and generalised burning issues.”
“I hope each caricature becomes a bullet that hits corrupt people,” said artist Nguyen Diep Thanh, who works for the Nghe An newspaper.
The book launching ceremony was held at Khuyen Club on Van Phuc Street. Some of the contributing artists interacted with the audience during the event.
Khuyen Club is a journalists’ club with that has hundreds of amateurs and professional members. Established a year ago, the club has so far hosted 20 talk shows for journalists to share their experiences with the public.
Vietnamese film week in US kicks off
Vietnamese films will be screened at the Vietnamese Film Week in the US from July 4 to 8, as announced by the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The week will feature six films: ‘Winning jackpot’ by Dustin Nguyen, ‘Thang Long Aspiration’ by Luu Trong Ninh, ‘The Children of the Village’ by Nguyen Duc Viet, Blind Knights’ by Luu Huynh, and ‘Scandal’ and ‘Scandal 2’ by Victor Vu.
They will be screened at Doris Duke, Freer and Sackler Galleries and AMC cinemas in Honolunu, Washington, DC, and New York City.
The films, reflecting the history, culture and people of Vietnam, have won many prestigious awards both in Vietnam and abroad.
During the week, a video clip promoting famous natural landscapes and cultural heritages in Vietnam will also be screened in the three cities.
On the occasion, an Ao Dai festival and a party introducing the culture and cuisine of Vietnam will also be held.
The Vietnamese Film Week in the US is part of activities to mark the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic ties.
Exhibition on Vietnam’s sovereignty of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa held
Historic proof affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos is being highlighted at an exhibition opened in the central province of Nam Dinh on June 23.
On display are 100 valuable documents, maps and objects discovered by both domestic and foreign researchers. Thousands of local residents were drawn to the exhibition on its first day.
The exhibited materials are in Han (classical Chinese used in Vietnam), Nom (Vietnamese ideographic script), Vietnamese and French dating from the 17th century to the outset of the 20th century by Vietnamese feudal states and the French government in Indochina (on behalf of the then Vietnamese state). They record the process of establishing, exercising and defending Vietnam’s sovereignty over the two archipelagos.
Additionally, maps published by China up to the beginning of 20th century demonstrate China’s southernmost territory as Hainan Island without any mention of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.
The exhibition aims to communicate the sovereignty of Vietnam over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa through documents, images and other items to affirm the nation’s standpoint and increase the awareness of Vietnamese at home and abroad to protecting the nation’s seas and islands.
The exhibition will run until June 26.
After concluding the exhibition, all documents, maps and objects at the exhibition will be presented to Nam Dinh province. The same exhibition is expected to be organised in more of Nam Dinh province’s districts.
Exhibition on former General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh opens
An exhibition themed ‘Former General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh and the Nation’s Innovation Cause’ opened at the National Library of Vietnam, Hanoi on June 22.
The exhibition features 1,000 documents and photos on former General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh’s life and career.
The six-day event is part of activities to commemorate the 100th birthday of former General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh (July 1, 1915 – July 1, 2015).
The exhibition aims to honour the significant contributions of Former General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh, who is credited with launching the Doi Moi reform in 1986 that lifted Vietnam out of the post-war economic crisis to become a middle-income country.
The exhibition is expected to be held in Hung Yen on June 29 and 30.
On the same day, Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Committee and the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Ho Chi Minh City organized a workshop featuring former Party General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh and his revolutionary career.
Nearly 100 presentations at the workshop analyzed Nguyen Van Linh’s role as a staunch leader, his close relationship with Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee and people, and his inspiring patriotism and devotion. The participants reviewed his revolutionary career, contributions to the revolution and national reform, and his strong leadership.
Nguyen Van Linh was born in 1915 in Giai Pham commune in Yen My district. During the American Resistance War, Linh served as the secretary of the Central Office for South Vietnam. He became the Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City in 1976 and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1986.
National professional drama competition kicks off in Thanh Hoa
Nineteen arts troupes from across the country are participating in the 2015 National Professional Drama Competition which officially kicked off in the central province of Thanh Hoa on June 21.
The competition features 29 plays that reflect the indomitable spirit of our forefathers in the cause of national construction and defence, and honour the revolutionary heroism and brave spirit of the Vietnamese people during the national resistance wars against France and the US.
The works submitted to the competition also praise positive examples in the national renewal cause as well as condemn social ills.
In addition to gold and silver prizes for outstanding plays and actors, prestigious awards will be given to the best writers, directors, musicians, choreographers, painters and lighting designers.
The event aims to honour individuals and collectives that have made outstanding achievements in artistic creation and made active contributions to the stage.
The competition also offers an opportunity for arts troupes and artists to meet, promote creations and focus on staging new high-quality plays, meeting people’s increasing demand for the arts.
The 2015 National Professional Drama Competition, which was co-organised Department of Performing Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Association of Stage Artists and the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will last until July 6.
Statue of late President Ho Chi Minh to be placed in Czech Republic
Vietnam would like to place a rock column or a statue of President Ho Chi Minh in Chrastava town in the Czech Republic as a commemoration of his visit to the local school which was accommodating 100 Vietnamese army children at the time.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the Czech Republic Truong Manh Son made the proposal during a working session with senior officials from the Liberec province.
He updated his hosts on Vietnam’s recent socio-economic achievements, highlighting the business potential for enterprises from the Czech Republic and the Liberec province in particular.
The host welcomed the Vietnamese delegation’s initiative to mark the late leader’s visit, saying it is significant for the local people as well as the Vietnamese community in the province.
They also supported the close economic cooperation between the two nations and praised the Vietnamese community in the country for their hard work and integration into the local society.
Mayor of Chrastava town Michal Canov led the Vietnamese delegation around the school where the Vietnamese children had studied and received President Ho Chi Minh in 1957.
The rock column is expected to be placed in front of the school on the occasion of the upcoming the 70 th anniversary of Vietnamese Independence Day on September 2, according to Son.
There are about 7,000 Vietnamese nationals living, working or studying in the province.
