During a working session with the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 8, Dung said 572 billion VND (26 million USD) will be earmarked to cover specific plans for the preservation.
Director of the Department Tran Viet Phuong said his agency will work closely with relevant bodies to preserve, promote and manage local recognized historical and cultural sites in the city.
Priority will be given to protecting and upholding the values of local intangible culture, including the Cai Rang floating market culture and traditional music such as Can Tho’s Don Ca Tai Tu (amateur singing) and Ho Song Hau (Ho singing on the Hau River).
Focus will also be on preserving antique houses, traditional trade villages, festivals and antique item collections.
To date, a number of popular relic sites in the city have been repaired and upgraded, including the Lo Vong Cung revolutionary base in Phong Dien District, the memorial of composer Nguyen Trong Quyen (a.k.a. Moc Quan) in Thot Not District, and the Hung Kings Temple in Binh Thuy District, among others.
