HCMC student creates art from everyday materials

A 21-year-old student in Ho Chi Minh City draws pictures using unusual materials like spinach seeds, tape, cigarette ash, and candle wax.

Tran Hoang Duc, who is studying graphic design at Ton Duc Thang University, said he started using unusual materials to draw after seeing a portrait of Ho Chi Minh made of tape by a foreign artist not long ago.

Here are some of Duc’s works.

Sparrows drawn with a chocolate ice cream stick.

Duc says he spent around two hours drawing this rose with Malabar spinach seeds.

A kingfisher made out of coffee.

A pair of fish drawn with chili sauce. Duc says this is the only work that has a limited lifespan.

Wax candle fathers for a flamingo.

A skull drawn with cigarette ash. Duc says he wants to send the message that “Smoking is the embodiment of death.”

A girl’s portrait drawn with charcoal.

Uncle Ho’s portrait made from tape. Duc says he learnt this idea from a foreign artist.
