Weekend fairs for foreigners boom in Saigon

In the past few years, fairs have bloomed in HCM City. These markets are only open on weekends, from 9am to 9pm, or only once a month.

HCM City has nearly a dozen fairs in this form. The most famous are Sale 2Day, Sale4share, Saigon Flea Market, Saigon Holiday Market …

Goods in these markets are quite diverse, but the most common are cosmetics, clothes, souvenirs, handmade items and accessories.

Andrew, a traveler from Ireland, said he was impressed with the fairs in HCM City. Besides reasonable prices, shop owners are young, dynamic, and able to communicate well in English.

“I have visited many weekend markets, not only Ben Thanh market or commercial centers as my previous trips. I’ve bought a lots of items like towels, bracelets, souvenirs … priced at just VND50,000-VND100,000 as gifts,” he said.

A fair on Vo Van Tan Road, District 3, is a favorite destination of foreign tourists in Saigon. Ms. Dang Thi My Dung, the investor of this fair, said foreign tourists favor fashion products at the fair and they account for 30% of visitors at the fair.

She said the fair has 150 stalls. Clothes are the best-sellers for reasonable prices and good quality.

Dung said the fair management board was seeking new, unique products.

Ms. Tuyen, the owner of a fashion stall, said the rent of a booth is VND900,000 ($45)/weekend. She has 30-40 foreign customers/day. She sells Made-in-Vietnam clothes for exports, with good quality and cheap prices – VND100,000-VND250,000.

A fair on Dinh Tien Hoang Street, District 1, focuses on handmade products such as jewelry, handbags, leather bracelets …

Mr. Thanh, the owner of a leather product store, said: “The shop has many products specifically designed for foreigners, with relatively cheap price of only VND200,000-VND700,000 ($10-32)/product.”

HCM City also has an indoor fair in the lobby of a 3-star hotel, which is convenient for shopping on hot days.

Mr. Thanh, a tour guide in District 1, said the weekend fairs have become tourist attractions.
