The exhibition showcases 30 photographs introducing Vietnamese people and their way of life in the period between 1981 and 1988 when Blanchard worked in the country and a number of photos from the period when he returned to visit after his working tenure.

The exhibition gave French viewers a rare insight into the lives of Vietnamese people in the 1980s.

At the exhibition, the visitors can explore the beauty of Ha Noi’s Old Quarter with small and short houses’ roofs covered with moss, bustling streets; a neglected Ha Long Bay; the old Quoc Hoc Hue high school and a glimpse of the lives of Vietnamese people in Ha Noi and Sai Gon (Ho Chi Minh City).

Addressing the event, Mr. Michael Blanchard said that 2015 is the year that the Vietnamese people celebrated the 40th anniversary of South Viet Nam Liberation Day, but the country opened its doors to foreign tourists 15 years later as a result of the severe conditions having to be endured as a result of the war, compounded by the sanctions imposed by the US and her allies.

Blanchard said that he has the greatest admiration for the Vietnamese people because of the determination that they displayed in overcoming serious difficulties and maintaining an optimistic view of life.

Mr. Blanchard was as the head of the AFP News Agency’s Office in Viet Nam from 1981 to 1983. For 10 years after his tenure, he returned to Viet Nam to do work as a tour guide and to visit his relatives and friends./
