Snow returns to Vietnam’s northern highlands

Snow and frost have started covering the resort town Sa Pa in the northern highlands, and its neighboring mountain spots.

A tourist from Hanoi who visited the Rock Church, a tourist attraction in Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province, at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday said it was covered in thick ice.

“Snow was scattered on many house roofs,” she told news website VnExpress.

More than 500 kilometers to the east of Sa Pa, the protective forest on the top of Phia Oac mountain at more than 1,900 meters high in Cao Bang Province was also covered in white from Wednesday afternoon.

The temperature at the mountain foot was 4 degrees Celsius, so those who want to see the winter frost have to climb to the top, which is the highest point in the province.

There’s a 3-kilometer road for motorbikes to the mountain top, while the car path is under repair.

Dong Van geopark in Ha Giang Province, 400 kilometers to the northeast of Sa Pa, received around half an hour of freezing rain, which falls during freezing temperatures that cause raindrops to freeze upon landing and resulting in thick glaze on the ground.

National weather forecasts said the temperatures in the northern highlands will continue dropping in the coming days.

Hoang Si Doan, a Cao Bang local who took the photo, said frost appeared from the morning. The mountain top had snow before but not as often as in Sa Pa, and many locals were excited about the rare phenomenon.
