Catherine Karnow"s 25-year photo collection is an intimate look at Vietnam

An American photographer will celebrate her last 25 years in Vietnam with an exhibition showing how the country and its people has changed.

“Vietnam – 25 years: Documenting a Changing Country” presents an intimate view from the lens of Catherine Karnow, known for her National Geographic works covering the globe over the last three decades.

Her father Stanley Karnow was a journalist and creator of the highly rated documentary series “Vietnam: A Television History” (1983). His tie-in book “Vietnam: A History” was a best seller.

Suzanne Lecht, Curator and Art Director of Hanoi-based Art Vietnam Gallery which is organizing the exhibition, said in a statement that although some of her passion from Vietnam comes from the father, Karnow has found her very own personal relationship to the country’s history and promising future.

She has formed relationships, many of which last until now, with the subjects in her works.

The exhibition includes photos from the doi moi years during the late 1980s after the state subsidy period, the early 1990s ahead of the US-Vietnam’s normalization of relations and the new Vietnam with “brazen consumption and extravagant lifestyles.”

It has photos of disfigured infants and other victims of Agent Orange, photos of abandoned Amerasians who were born from the Vietnam War, and photos about General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-2013).

In 1994, she was the only foreign photojournalist to accompany General Giap on his first return to the forest encampment in Vietnam’s northern highlands from which he plotted the battle of Dien Bien Phu to defeat France.

Karnow and many of her subjects will be present at the opening of the exhibition on April 10.

The exhibition will last until May 8 at Art Vietnam Gallery, 24 Ly Quoc Su Street, in celebration of the 20 year anniversary of diplomatic relationship between America and Vietnam, and the 40 year anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
