Ho Chi Minh City has instructed tourism companies to plan for new tour services to Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands, after a Hai Phong company became the first to bring tourists there last December.

Spratlys is an island chain in the East Sea, the Vietnamese term for the South China Sea.

Saigontourist and Tan Cang Offshore Travel Joint Stock Company were ordered to offer a reasonable price to attract tourists to the islands, Dan Tri reported.

In February, the Ministry of Transport announced a plan to launch civilian flights to Truong Sa this year.

Last year, the Hai Phong-based Hoa Binh Travel Company launched tours to the islands, DK1 and DK2 oil rigs and several other destinations in the archipelago.

Tourists take flights from Hai Phong to Ho Chi Minh City before departing for Truong Sa on boat at Saigon New Port for the seven-day tour.

The tour also includes exchange activities with soldiers and residents and visiting a museum displaying items related to the islands’ defense.
