Officials in Nha Trang are taking punitive measures against a luxury resort for making a stretch of the beach off-limits to the public, while the resort claimed it has rented the area from the city government.

Ngo Khac Thinh of Nha Trang’s Urban Management Department said the department has asked the town government to fine Ana Mandara VND30 million (US$1,380) after many tourists complained it had prevented them from using the beach.

Nguyen Ba Dung, a tourist from southern Vietnam, said he was walking past the resort recently when its security guards accosted him and ordered him to find some other route.

Nguyen Van Cuong, a local, said he goes fishing near the resort several times a week and often sees tourists being shooed away near the resort.

As Thanh Nien reporter observed, local children were not even allowed to walk under the shadow of coconut trees on the resort’s beach on very hot days.

A guard at the town’s only beachfront resort said Ana Mandara has rented the stretch of the beach and so has the right to use it as it wishes.

Nguyen Khac Ha, vice chairman of Nha Trang, without mentioning if there is indeed a lease contract, said it is “wrong and unacceptable” for the resort to shoo people away.

“No one has the right to ban people from walking on a public beach.”
