‘Calculator mistake’ more than doubles seafood bill in tourism hub in central Vietnam

It is never useless to carefully check your meal bill before opening your wallet in Vietnam.

A Vietnamese tourist would have paid more than twice their dinner costs at a seafood restaurant in Da Nang, a tourism hub in the central region, if one of his friends had not re-read the bill.

The vacationer, preferring to be known only as B.V.T., was enjoying seafood with six others, including three children, at the Be Anh restaurant near the Bien Dong beach park in the city on Tuesday night.

They were billed VND4.43 million (US$203) for the meal.

“When I was opening my wallet, a woman in our group re-checked the bill and realized that it should have cost only more than VND1.95 million [$90],” T., hailing from the north-central province of Ha Tinh, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday.

Angered, the woman complained to the restaurant owner, and was told they just made some mistakes on the calculator.

Tran Van Van, the owner, told Tuoi Tre he had calculated and written the bill on his own.

“I used a calculator and must have pressed a wrong number key, or two keys at a time, so the bill was more than double what it actually is,” Van said.

Van added that he had apologized to the diners.

“Why should we cheat people when doing business?” he added.

The coastal city of Da Nang, more than 850km from Ho Chi Minh City and 821km from Hanoi, has a reputation for safe, friendly and honest tourism.

T. said he had visited Da Nang many times, but lost a little trust in the destination after this incident.

The tourist was also skeptical about the wrong calculation excuse by the owner.

“Mistakes are inevitable but how could they be wrong on such a huge disparity?” he said.

T. sent a photo of his bill along with the complaint to Tuoi Tre, from which many readers of the newspaper discovered that the restaurant owner had indeed had problems with his number input.

For the last two dishes, respectively fetching VND25,000 and VND40,000, instead of pressing “25 + 40,” the owner must have pressed 2,540, many readers pointed out.

But again, it is never unnecessary to check what you are going to pay for.
