According to the Ha Noi-based Viet Nam Cheo Theater, they are working on a folk art tour titled “Tieng trong cheo 2015” (drum sounds of the northern opera in 2015) to restore the unique kind of cheo performance on a temple’s yard to introduce the original stage setting, tools and makeup styles of this genre of art to audiences.
The organizer will stage three classic plays, “Quan am Thi Kinh”, “Luu Binh Duong Le” and “Kim Nham”, every Saturday from now until September 19 at Thap Temple in Dich Vong Street in Cau Giay District and Tu Lien Temple in Au Co Street in Tay Ho District and Xuan Tao Temple in Xuan Dinh Street in Bac Tu Liem District.
The program will also introduce models of five typical cheo characters via illustration picture collections of artist JeetzDung and audiences can try to play their favorite characters to gain hands-on experience of cheo.
Director Doan Dinh Vinh said, “A temple’s yard is the most ideal space to perform cheo and where the art of cheo originated. Thus, the program needs to follow strict setting rules of cheo performance in an extended three-side stage with a mattress in the center and a band of instrumentalists on two sides.
The folk art tour is carried out by students in the project “Toi xe dich” (I move) and Viet Nam Cheo Theater. “Toi xe dich” is a social communication project established in June 2012 for young people to learn about culture and tourism. In 2013, they successfully hosted the project “Tieng vong ngan nam” (an echo from thousands of years) featuring cheo performances at Kim Lien Temple in Ha Noi’s Dong Da District.
Thanh Ngoan, director of Viet Nam Cheo Theater, expects such projects to be expanded and to give youth a chance to see the beauty of the country’s traditional performing art.
