This projects itself is a bridge for the cultural exchange for the people in America and Vietnam. Beyond that, it is also an unique way of nonverbal communication, using the motions of body languages to express the sophisticated emotions in contemporary dance.

Dance Works to Present

“GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS” is a contemporary dance work created as a part of a project “70s Vietnam”, by hearing-impaired dancers of Together Higher dance company. The piece portrayed to the audience the deep emotions of people and society in Vietnam in the 70s. The range of thinking and philosophy of the dance takes the audience not only on a historical journey of the time, but also leads the way to new experiences of the torn, and struggle of a person in the selection to be an independent individual or as an individual in a group, or merely a group of individuals.

– Choreographer: Le Vu Long

– Music: Tri Minh

“Into Sunlight” is an evening-length dance inspired by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and best selling author David Maraniss’s book – “They Marched Into Sunlight”. The performance by Robin Becker Dance constitutes a model for dance’s fundamental role in addressing the individual and societal devastation of war by offering a medium for healing and dialogue. Through the universal language of movement, this dance has the unique capacity to generate a deeply felt experience of healing. “Into Sunlight” demonstrates how dance can help us bear witness to life, awakening us to our state of being, and to our shared humanity.

ROME (Jerome Reuter) Live in Saigon

Sat 17 Oct 2015, 8 – 11 pm

Saigon Ranger

5/7 Nguyễn Siêu, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh

Lo and behold, better more enthusiastically, the comeback of Jerome Reuter to Vietnam this October 17th at Saigon Ranger. The 2nd and again the only show in Vietnam being part of ROME’s 10th year anniversary, the performance will present an even wider, diverse-r of his immensely expansive repertoire, not excluding material from his latest, acclaimed full length “Passage to Rhodesia” (2014).

Luxembourgish singer-songwriter jerome reuter founded ROME in 2005 and has since recorded and released groundbreaking albums in the underground folk and post-industrial music world at a breathtaking pace. ROME’s musical and lyrical world is genuinely unique, blending traditional songwriting craftsmanship, unusual arrangements and fine poetry into one monstrous and intimate musical output that combines chanson, dark ambient, apocalyptic folk, pop, acoustic rock, martial industrial, cold wave – all rolled into one impressive avant-garde package. Over a series of remarkable concept albums, the Luxembourgish artist has developed a unique “poetry of longing” which rings out from the dark melancholic mist of rootlessness and which gives expression to a comprehensive feeling of modern forlornness.

Rome-Jerome Reuter

A must for music lovers, with genres, inhabitants of nerdom and viewpoint differences thrown somewhere else.

A Night at the Opera – “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini

Sun 20 Sep 2015, 2 – 7 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Come to the screening of a classic production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Tosca”.

“Tosca” is a three-act opera by Giacomo Puccini, based on the melodramatic play by Victorien Sardou. The story involves the singer Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi, and the chief of police Baron Scarpia. When a prisoner escapes and his whereabouts are known only to Cavaradossi and Tosca, Scarpia uses the torture of Cavaradossi to wrest the information from Tosca. Tragedy ensues when all three characters wrongly assume they can get what they desire from the others.

“Tosca” is structured as a through-composed work, with arias, recitative, choruses and other elements musically woven into a seamless whole. Puccini used Wagnerian leitmotifs (short musical statements) to identify characters, objects and ideas. Three of the best known arias in the entire opera repertory are in the opera, one in each of the acts.

The opera will be screened in the original Italian with English subtitles.

For those with membership at the Cinémathèque, make a reservation as usual by phoning the Cinémathèque, daily between 14:00 – 21:00 at 3936-2648. A limited number of tickets are also available through the Opera Guild, send an email to info@hanoioperaguild.com. A donation of VND 60,000 is suggested.

Live Performance of French Jazz Duo Peirani-Parisien

Sat 18 Sep 2015, 7.30 pm

Hue Academy of Music

01 Le Loi, Hue City

You are invited to the live performance of French jazz duo Peirani-Parisien: Emile Parisien: saxophonist – “artist of the year” & Vincent Peirani: accordéon – “new artist” and “artist of the year”.

Vincent Peirani gained international recognition by winning the Django Reinhardt prize and “Best Musician of the Year 2013”. He also received the prize for “Best Newcomer of the year” at the Victoires du Jazz in 2014. Emile Parisien was awarded “Musician of the Year” at Victoires du Jazz in 2014 and “Best Musician of the Year” at the Django Reinhardt in 2013.

They met each other in the quartet of drummer Daniel Humair. They found out that they also shared a passion for intoxicating sound cascades, an open ear for exciting motifs across the entire range of styles, and a desire to improvise, free of all technical constraints. They have performed on many stages all over Europe, with their debut album “Belle Epoque”, in which the soprano saxophone and accordion pay tribute to the swing of Sidney Bechett.

That is really a phenomenon of Jazz!

em|body by Doan Hoang Lam

20 September

Manzi Art Space, 14 Phan Huy Ich St., Ba Dinh Dist., Hanoi

’em|body’, an exhibition of both new and never before seen works by Doan Hoang Lam, one of Hanoi’s most accomplished painters.

Comprising four lacquer and five oil on canvas, em|body transforms the walls of Manzi into windows looking out into landscapes that are both cosmic and intimate, recalling images of the galaxy whilst revealing sensuous properties of the human body.

The partially rendered human-like shapes look vulnerable and concealed, but also confrontational and powerful, staring straight ahead, with their bare skin, disembodied figures and provoking positions all on display.

Distorted and exaggerated, the body is repeatedly abstracted through the artist’s manipulations of forms and shifts in scales, acting as much a symbol of desire and a celebration of beauty as an object of fetish and an embodiment of violence.

Photo Exhibition “Cliché of a Landscape” by Inga Kerber

Opening: Fri 16 Sep 2015, 6 pm

Exhibition: 17 Sep – 04 Oct 2015, 9 am – 7 pm

Goethe Institut

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

“Cliché” is a term that is used by artist-in-residence Inga Kerber in a deliberately ambiguous way. The artist explores the reproductive potential of photography as well as classic subjects and motifs. Under the title “Cliché of a Landscape, Jungle”, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi exhibits the photographic works of Inga Kerber from 17 September to 4 October. “Cliché of a Landscape, Jungle” deals with landscapes, forests and nature, which are also the subjects she wants to focus on during her time in Vietnam.

In French, the word “cliché” can mean “the act of taking a picture” and is simultaneously used for the photographic negative. But Inga Kerber’s works also refer to the German term “Klischee” that can stand for shoddy imitation, prejudice or the printing block (part of the letterpress printing process). The artist records classic subjects and motifs such as flower bouquets, landscapes or animals, making not just one but several analog photos, and changing the camera’s perspective very slightly with each image. This results in what at first glance are unspectacular, everyday images, which the artist then scans and prints, retaining all the flaws and errors that have occurred during the process. Arranged in triptychs, or in series of four or five, these sequences always exhibit variations and nuances in each motif, thereby acquiring an almost irresistible painterly quality.

Free admission.

Inga Kerber, born in 1982 in Berlin, lives and works in Leipzig. She studied photography at the Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in France and the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, under Prof. Gütschow & Eiko Grimberg, among others.

Inga Kerber has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the working grant Schloss Plüschow and Marion Ermer Prize. She will be working in Hanoi in 3 months in the Artist-in-Residence program by the Cultural Foundation Saxony.

Exhibition “Trace The Mountain” by artist Taihei Kimura

Opening: Thu 17 Sep 2015, 6 pm

Artist talk: Thu 17 Sep 2015, 4 pm

Exhibition: 17 Sep – 15 Oct 2015, 10 am – 6 pm (opens from Wed to Sun)

Nha San Collective’s new space

15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

One of Japan’s most promising young artists, Taihei Kimura creates sculptural installations and performances created by deliberate demolition – vehicles falling from the ceiling, electric motors ripped apart by centrifugal force, bombs exploding inside a transparent resin structure. Puzzling, raw, and honest, his works are not only the result of careful research on architecture and physics, but also an evolving process of experimentation.

Continuing his interest of conversing with the past, tracing the transformation of environment – resource depletion, moreover learning personal and collective memories and history, Taihei Kimura travels to Hanoi, Quang Tri and Quang Ninh for research and filming. His work allows the audience to think of the past remained and contemplate the relationships between human and nature, the contradiction between construction and deconstruction as well as the vulnerability of our every day existence.

Nha San is pleased to invite you to a solo exhibition “Trace The Mountain” by artist Taihei Kimura at 6:00pm, Thursday 17 September 2015 at Nha San’s new space at 1 Lương Yên, 15th floor of HNCC building. The exhibition will present his past works and the new project implemented in Vietnam.

The artist will give an artist talk on his practices on the next day at 4PM same day, Thursday 17th September 2015.

Artist Talk with Inga Kerber: “Trends in Photography Today”

Sat 26 Sep 2015, 7 pm

Goethe Institut

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

Which trends can be indicated in photography and what will be the progression of contemporary photography? Within an artist talk on September 26 at 7 PM, artist-in-residence Inga Kerber discusses the trends of contemporary photography with the award-winning photo artist Maika Elan and the well-known visual artist Nguyen The Son and compares the current situation of Germany and Vietnam.

Inga Kerber explores the reproductive potential of photography as well as classic subjects and motifs. Under the title “Cliché of a Landscape”, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi exhibits the photographic works of Inga Kerber from 17 September to 4 October.

Maika Elan started her career in the field of fashion photography. Her first documentary project “The Pink Choice” is dealing with homosexual couples. The project won several awards, especially the World Press Photo Prize, amongst others.

Since 2012, artist Nguyen The Son has been working as a lecturer at the University of Fine Arts Vietnam and has been represented in many group – and solo exhibitions. His latest project “8m²” addresses the life and living environment of the migration workers in Vietnam.
