The unique art form of water puppetry

Bui Thuong village in Le Loi commune, Gia Loc district, the northern province of Hai Duong is famous for water puppetry, a unique cultural characteristic of the Red River Delta region.

Initiated in the era of the Ly Dynasty (the 11th-12th centuries), water puppetry has been associated with the life and various festivals of Bui Thuong village. Despite the changing context throughout history, Bui Thuong water puppetry has been preserved and developed due to the enthusiasm and passion of local artisans.

On the occasion of the traditional rural market being exhibited at the Vietnamese Ethnic Groups Culture-Tourism Village in Son Tay district, Hanoi from October 16-18, the water puppetry troupe from Bui Thuong village held unique performances, attracting a large number of visitors.
