The number of Russians visiting Vietnam rose by more than half in October after months of declines due to the ruble’s fall.

Roughly 24,000 Russian visitors arrived in Vietnam last month, a 60 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

This figure is impressive as the number of Russian tourists heading for the Southeast Asian country dropped 10.6 percent year-on-year to 236,335 in the first nine months of this year.

Russia’s RBK news website quoted Vitaliy V.Chizhikov, general director of Russian tour operator PAKS, as attributing the jump to discount programs.

Between late August and October, Russia’s Aeroflot Airline ran a promotional campaign for flights connecting Moscow and Ho Chi Minh City, he said.

Accordingly, a round-trip ticket on the route cost 30,000 RUB (US$462), much cheaper than 45,000 RUB on the Moscow-Bangkok route.

Vietnam attracted nearly 5.7 million foreign arrivals in January-September, down 5.9 percent from the same period of last year.
