Visiting remote commune of ‘lychee trees’ in Bac Giang

Cam Son Lake is 2,600ha wide and its breezes keep the commune cool year round. Nature remains relatively untouched by people, leaving it a splendidly serene hideaway. The area is thinly populated with only about 100 households. It’s that time of year when the lychee trees are in full bloom in this— one of the most fertile regions of Vietnam. Local people mainly travel by motorboat. Paths on the banks of the lake are slippery during rainy days, making travel difficult. Local people are very friendly and hospitable and often invite visitors into their home. There they have eked out a self-sufficient lifestyle only rarely making contact with the outside world, travelling by boat, and lacking any modern means of communication. Households subsist by growing their own fruits and vegetables and raising livestock. The district is famous for its ‘Luc Ngan lychee. Adults take turns rowing the boats taking children to and from school.
