A new plan for the services, which will connect top tourist destinations in District 1, is now pending approval

Ho Chi Minh City’s transport department has once again sought the city government’s permission to launch the first-ever electric bus service in the downtown tourist area, news website VnExpress reported.

Under the plan, two electric bus routes will be opened.

Every day, between 5 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., 11 buses will operate on each route connecting the September 23rd Park and the Saigon Zoo.

The first route will go through downtown tourist destinations including the backpackers’ area, the pedestrian street of Nguyen Hue and District 1’s shopping malls.

The second route will go through less known destinations.

The transport department said the service will be piloted on the first route. If things go well, the second route will be opened after a while.

A possible date for the launch has not been decided.

A bus would arrive every 10-15 minutes, each capable of carrying 12 passengers and with a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour, it said.

The transport department will adjust the daily timetable of the bus if needed.

The fare for less than half the route will cost VND6,000 (27 US cents), while passengers traveling more than that will pay VND12,000.

Disabled people, elders and children less than 1.3 meters tall will be given free rides.

The department said a transport company had been chosen to take charge of the first route. If the HCMC People’s Committee supports the plan, the company will launch the service 45 days after it has received the written approval.
