The city’s tourism department announced on Thursday eight winning products of its souvenir design contest, news website Saigon Times Online reported.

The products, including handmade purses and wallets and a pop-up book, have been described as creative and useful.

Selected from 66 entries, the winning products are also affordable and easy to carry, the website reported.

Designer Truong Quy Nghia’s The “Saigon in me” collection by designer Truong Quy Nghia, which consists of photo frames, card holders and boxes decorated with motorbike figurines. Nghia also has a T-shirt collection.

La Quoc Khanh, vice director of Ho Chi Minh City’s tourism department, was quoted as saying that more and more foreign tourists are coming to the city, but it is difficult for them to find products that are representative of the city.

He hoped the winning products will help promote the city and encourage visitors to spend more on souvenirs.

Official figures showed 3.2 million foreigners visited the city in the first nine months, up 5 percent from the same period last year. It reported over VND69.1 trillion (US$3.05 billion) in tourism revenues, an increase of 6 percent.

These bags are made from coi — a plant that looks like grass and is common in Vietnam. Designer Nguyen Thi Hue names her collection “Please take me with you when saying goodbye to Saigon.”
