Choir Festival to honour 1945 revolution


The Choir Festival 2015 will open next week by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in co-operation with HCM City People’s Committee, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).


The festival’s theme, Nhung Bai Ca Dang Dang (Songs Dedicated to the Party) , aims to highlight revolutionary music in praise of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, President Ho Chi Minh and national heroes.


Hundreds of professional and amateur performers from art troupes, cultural centres, universities and colleges in six districts have registered to join the event.


Participants who want to perform can choose from mixed choir, male choir, female choir, chamber choir, children’s and youth choir.


The festival will take place at the city’s Opera House at 7 Lam Son Square, District 1, on August 20.


Charity run to raise funds for heart patients


A charity run at Celadon City in HCM City’s on Saturday will be organised to raise VND100 million (US$4,700) to help heart patients.


All donations made by the participants will go to the Ministry of the Interior’s “Hieu Ve Trai Tim” (Understanding the Heart) fund meant to help underprivileged people.


The event, organised by logistics company Maersk Viet Nam, has attracted 250 participants.


There will be 5km and 3km races for men and women respectively and games to educate sedentary office workers about some common health risks.


Photo, video contest to mark National Day


Young people at home and abroad, and foreigners living in Viet Nam, are encouraged to participate in a photo and video contest launched by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union this week, as part of the union’s activities to celebrate the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).


The event, Duoi Bong Co To Quoc (Under the Flag of Viet Nam), aims to highlight love for country, and the lives of young people, their dreams and challenges at work.


Images about traditional culture and lifestyle are also encouraged.


Submissions should be no more six photos, both black-and-white and colour, and no more than one minute and 20 seconds for a video.


Organisers will present two first prizes worth VND15 million (U$740) each and two second prizes of VND10 million ($500) each in the two categories of photo and video.


Three third prizes of VND5 million ($250) each and dozens of consolation prizes will also be given.


Music Story of the Old Quarter out today








Choir Festival to honour 1945 revolution, Music Story of the Old Quarter out today, Artist Sac to unveil new paintings, London-based DJ debuts at Observatory, Rapper, Japanese DJ hit Chill Sky Bar








Music Story of the Old Quarter – a summer-long monthly music show that explores the beauty of Ha Noi’s traditional music genres, will play for audiences on Friday.


Sounds found on the streets like hawker chants and honking traffic are combined with contemporary installation art to bring to life the history of the Ha Noi’s music, city and culture.


The concert includes performances by well-known singers and musicians – Vu Nhat Tan, Dam Minh, Ly Truc Son and Tran Duy Hung.


The show starts at 8pm at the Old Quarter’s Culture Exchange Centre, at 50 Dao Duy Tu Street.


Artist Sac to unveil new paintings


Artist Ngo Van Sac will unveil his most recent work in a solo exhibition that opens on Sunday, at Work Room Four.


The exhibition, In Opposite, is a collection of paintings that reflect a new artistic vision and mode of expression.


The show will open at 3pm on Sunday and runs until September 9. It is open from 10am to 6pm daily.


Work Room Four is on level 24 of the Packexim Building Tower 1, No 49, Lane 15, An Duong Vuong Street, Tay Ho District.


Sale to raise funds for HIV/AIDS children


The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi will organise a garage sale to raise fund for the Smile Group – a charity organisation that provides support to children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.


Organisers said the lightly used clothes and accessories will come largely from donations by the hotel staff. The items will be priced reasonably. Half of the total revenue will be donated to the Smile Group.


The free entrance event will run from 9am to 5pm at Thang Long meeting room, 56 Ly Thai To Street.


London-based DJ debuts at Observatory


London-based DJ and producer Sam Williams, aka Chamboche, will make his debut in the city on Friday.


The musician will present disco, house, and techno styles. Another London-based DJ, Ben Start, will join him for the show.


Chamboche released his debut extended play Ipso Facto in 2009. He has performed with famous DJs across Europe.


The show will begin at 10pm at The Observatory, 5 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, in District 4. Admission is free before midnight and VND150,000 afterwards.


Rapper, Japanese DJ hit Chill Sky Bar


DJ Lead, also called King of Japan, will perform with Vietnamese rapper Suboi in the show Hip Hop Takedown, which will be held at Chill Sky Bar today.


The event will also feature a performance by Lead’s dance crew. Born and raised in Kyoto, Lead embodies the spirit of traditional Japanese culture with hip hop flavour. Rising to fame in the mid-90s, he has performed in huge clubs in Europe, Asia and the US.


The performance starts at 9pm. It will take place on the rooftop of AB Tower, 76A Le Lai Street, in District 1. For table reservations, call 0938822838.


New band at Hard Rock Cafe


The Hard Rock Cafe Vietnam is now featuring The Queen band every Thursday night. The band, consisting of nine Vietnamese and Filipino singers and musicians, will play Latin and rock music.


The event starts at 8.30pm at 39 Le Duan St in District 1.


Acoustic trio at Decibel Lounge


The Lost Art, a HCM City-based band of three expat musicians from the UK, the US and Japan, will hold an acoustic music performance at Decibel Lounge on August 21.


The band, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Dan, percussionist Eric and guitarist Kai, will play and sing popular Vietnamese songs like Cho Nguoi Noi Ay (I’m Waiting There for You) composed by Huy Tuan and Tim Lai (Found) by Microwave.


The concert will start at 9pm at 79/2/5 Phan Ke Binh Street in District 1. Admission is free.


Vegetarian street foods introduced at Metropole


Since 2002s to date, Metropole Convention Center has become a favorite place for people to enjoy Vegetarian buffet in full moon day, especially on the 14th and 15th day of July (of the lunar calendar).


This year, Metropole has launched vegetarian buffet named “Old Saigon street foods”, displaying over 60 vegetarian dishes cooked with clean materials. The Metropole’s manager said the event will be kicked off on August 13 to September 13. People can enjoy Vietnam and Saigon street foods such as Bo Bia -Vietnamese spring roll version – sausage spring rolls and peanut sauce; Banh trang tron (Rice paper mixed with dried beef)…


Lunch buffet coupons are sold at Metropole for VND 190,000/pax (from 11:00 to 13:30) and will be VND 260,000/pax for dinner buffet (from 17:30 – 21:00).


It will be VND 280,000 on August 28 (the 15th day of July of the lunar calendar).
