The Museum of Cham Sculpture was built by the French in order to collect, preserve and exhibit sculptures of the Kingdom of Champa found at Cham towers and bastions in the central coastal provinces from Ha Tinh to Binh Thuan Provinces as well as in the Central Highlands region.
The museum currently houses nearly 2,000 exhibits, 288 of which are from My Son, Tra Kieu, Dong Duong, Thap Mam, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, and Kon Tum. Around 187 other exhibits are being exhibited outdoors and 1,200 others remain in storage…
The construction of the Museum of Cham Sculpture aimed to ensure some requirements to display and organize some events, keep some objects and increase more quality to serve tourists to study.
Accordingly, the upgrading construction was a chance to restore and rearrange some displays in order to ensure enough space for exhibitions, events and preservation as well as improved services in order to better serve visitors and researchers.
As planned, the museum will be upgraded on November, 2015 on 100 year anniversary for the Museum of Cham Sculpture. As estimated, the museum will fulfil in 2016 to prepare for the APEC in Da Nang in 2017.
The Museum of Cham Sculpture is a museum located in Hai Chau District, Đa Nang, central Vietnam, near the Han River. The establishment of a Cham sculpture museum in Da Nang was first proposed in 1902 by the Department of Archaeology of EFEO.
The museum has been expanded twice. The first expansion was in the mid-1930s, with two new galleries providing display space for the objects added in the 1920s and 1930s. Henri Parmentier directed the display based on the areas where sculptures were found.
