Uber now accespants cash spanayment in Vietnam

Ride-hailing service Uber in Vietnam on Wednesday began allowing riders to pay in cash, in an apparent bid to attract more bookings in a country where cashless payment is not widely familiar.

The cash payment option is rolling out gradually to all riders over the coming weeks, Uber said the same day.

The ride-hailing service entered Vietnam more than a year ago, and currently operates only in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Riders have to book a ride via the Uber app, with the complete fare automatically billed to their credit cards at the end of a ride.

“Hundreds of thousands of commuters have moved around Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi with Uber as their preferred choice, [but] there were many who never had the chance because of Uber’s cashless payment system,” the company said.

The introduction of cash as an alternative payment option is thus intended to make the service “accessible to everyone,” according to Uber.

Vietnam is the first country in Southeast Asia and only the third country worldwide after India and Kenya where Uber has introduced cash payments.

“Vietnam was specifically selected for this experiment because it provides us with the right environment to test a new payment option amongst a sizeable and sophisticated rider and driver community in the Southeast Asia region,” the company explained.

Uber noted that not all of its users in Vietnam will see the cash option right away because it will be “testing with a select few at first,” before gradually expanding to more people.

The company also encourages customers to give feedback after testing the new payment option.

Uber has got off to a rough start when it entered Vietnam, with different views from local authorities on its legality.

But the company is apparently doing well in the Southeast Asian country, as it claimed to enjoy “tremendous support in Vietnam.”
