Vietjet Air asked for urgent assistance from the Government, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Transport, and the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore after 1,515 Vietnamese passengers were denied entry into Singapore, although they showed necessary papers.
According to the airline, this has affected the image of Vietnam and of Vietjet, causing great damage to the carrier as it had to pay for unexpected expenses such as fees for detention rooms (SGD17/hour) and costs for monitoring employees of SGD32/hour.
Vietjet has had to pay more than 1 million SGD for the costs since it launched the HCM City – Singapore route. In the first six months of 2015, the figure was 450,000 SGD. In addition, the airline also had to pay the full airfare to return to Vietnam for these passengers.
For those denied to enter Singapore, VietJet asked the immigration authorities of Singapore to handle them quickly so that the passengers could return to Vietnam on the next flight in order to reduce time and airport costs.
The firm also suggested that Singapore should consider reducing the custody and supervision fees of the passengers who are refused entry.
The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) has asked the Ministry of Transportation to work with the Foreign Ministry to send diplomatic notes to Singaporean diplomatic representatives to ask for a clear explanation why many Vietnamese passengers, mainly women, were denied entry.
The CAAV also sent a letter to the Singaporean counterpart asking this agency to provide CAAV with a list of the Vietnamese who are not encouraged to enter Singapore.
On July 23, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry had discussions with Singapore. However, Singapore has not issued an official answer yet.
“The Foreign Ministry has also directed the authorities of Vietnam in Singapore to verify relevant information, and work with Singaporean agencies to ensure the legitimate rights and interests of the citizens of Vietnam in line with bilateral agreements with Singapore and ASEAN agreements,” the spokesman said.
On July 25, Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnamese Counsellor in Singapore, said the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority of Singapore (ICA) said that Singapore’s policy is welcoming citizens of countries, including Vietnam, to travel to Singapore. Singapore does not apply any discriminatory form or measures with Vietnam nationals, she said.
However, ICA does not allow entry to citizens who use passports with different personal information for multiple entry. Singapore also refuses entry visas to citizens who break the law of Singapore, those who get multiple entry without clear reasons, or those who enter the country to find work.
