Beauty of Russian music in “Khachaturian and Prokofiev” concert


HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will organize a concertcalled “Khachaturian and Prokofiev” at HCMC Opera House on August 9,featuring famous masterpieces of Russian composers Aram Khachaturian andSergei Prokofiev whose compositions became part of the music classicsof the 20th century.

The concert will be held under the baton of Vietnamese conductor Le PhiPhi who has returned from his performance in Macedonia. Khachaturian’smusic brought together the Eastern rhythms and harmonies of Armenian,Georgian, and Azerbaijani music with Western traditions during theSoviet era will be staged by violinist Lidia Dobrevska and HBSO SymphonyOrchestra.


The first part of the event will feature Aram Khachaturian’s ViolinConcerto in D Minor which bears the unmistakable stamp of its composerin its characteristic rhythmic drive and rich, folk-infused melodies.Being staged for the first time by David Oistrakh in Moscow 1940, theconcerto begins with a fierce and energetic figure, followed by itsintoxicating Andante with a free-flowing, semi-improvisatory feel andthe highly folk-influenced finale with the form of a vigorous Armeniancountry dance.


Violinist Lidia Dobrevska will show the beauty of Russian music mixedwith American folk music as she did successfully in Russia, Macedonia,Italy, France, Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain, Sweden and Portugal.


Khachaturian is also known internationally for his ballet music and TheAdagio from ballet ”Spartacus” – his most acclaimed work in thepost-Stalin period – will cover the second part of the concert. Theballet won Lenin Prize in 1954 and has been revised into many versionsby many international choreographers like Leonid Yakobso, Igor Moiseevand Yury Grigorovich.


Audiences will be also entertained with the Sergei Prokofiev’s SuiteNo.2 from “Romeo and Juliet” which has been staged in many places aroundthe world like Denmark, the U.S., Germany, Hungary and Canada.


The concert will start at 8 p.m. at the Opera House, 7 Lam Son Squarein HCMC’s District 1. Admission costs VND550,000, VND400,000, VND350,000and VND200,000 per person. Students just pay VND80,000.
