Although floods have withdrawn for several days, many people in Mong Duong cannot go home. Tens of houses disappeared under a mud layer of several meters. Ten days after the floods, people people began returning home to clean up the mud and repair the houses. According to local authorities, 67 households lost their homes after the houses were completely submerged in mud; 40 households were affected as the roads to their houses were seriously damaged. Most of the 107 affected households were miners at the Mong Duong coal mine. The local government has provided these families with rent for three months, with VND2 million/family. Ms. Ha Thi Luong’s house is located on a high ground so the layer of mud is only 20cm. However, she has had to ask for help from her relatives to clean up the house. Mr. Nguyen Duc Duc’s house is submerged in a thick layer of mud of over 1m. The house of Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, deputy manager of Mong Duong coal mine’s mechanical enterprise. Ha was luckier than many other households because his house was located on high ground and the house was locked, so the furniture was not damaged. Both men and women in Mong Duong try to clean their houses and seek tools left in the mud. En (far right) and 60 other families live in a resettlement area, where they are provided with free power, water, and food. At the Mong Duong coal mine, after several days of working days and nights, about 70% of damage has been recovered.  The warehouse was submerged in more than a meter of mud and water. Workers spray water to wash hundreds of thousands of large and small supplies. Teams of workers take turns to dredge the thick mud layer. Two thirds of workers at Mong Duong coal mine have returned to work. According to Quang Ninh province, the floods killed 17 people, and damaged thousands of houses. Total material damage is estimated at over VND2 trillion (nearly $1 billion).
