Vietnam’s Dai Nam theme spanark asked to spanay $4.42mn in fines, tax arrears

The company behind a famous amusement park that was at loggerheads with local authorities in the southern province of Binh Duong last year has been requested to pay a whopping VND99.05 billion (US$4.42 million) in fines and tax arrears.

Huynh Uy Dung, chairman and general director of Dai Nam JSC, said on Wednesday he will lodge a complaint against that request by provincial authorities, which was made following a joint inspection of the operations of the Dai Nam Tourist Park.

The hefty sum includes more than VND97.7 billion ($4.36 million) worth of tax arrears and fines, a VND1.1 billion ($49,107) fine for the company’s wrongdoings in investment projects, and other penalties for violating the law on construction, the Binh Duong administration announced on Tuesday.

Dai Nam Co. has to clear the payment within 30 days from Wednesday, during which it holds the right to file a complaint against the penalties.

Besides the entertainment park, Dai Nam Co. also invested in the Song Than 2 Industrial Park and the Di An residential area.

Inspectors concluded that the company failed to prepare relevant environmental protection reports and set up waste treatment systems for these projects.

The fines for violating construction regulations are levied because Dai Nam Co. built 167 sub-construction units, such as ticket booths or a filling station, for its theme park without permission.

When contacted by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday, Dung said he was on an overseas business trip, but had been informed of the inspection results.

The businessman said he will pay as requested, but will lodge a complaint.

“First we will abide by the conclusion of the government,” he said. “I no longer consider it a ‘win or lose’ situation.”

Dai Nam Tourist Park is a theme park popular with people in Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City and other neighboring localities.

In 2014, Dung decided to close the park from November 10 to December 31, saying he had been disadvantaged by local authorities in doing his business.

The park even offered free admission and slashed tickets for games there by 50 percent prior to the shutdown. The theme park re-opened on January 1 this year.
